Foy D. Kohler

Foy David Kohler (born February 15, 1908 in Oakwood (Ohio) , † December 23, 1990 ) was an American diplomat. He was US ambassador to the Soviet Union at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis .

Life

Kohler grew up in Toledo (Ohio) and attended the university there . He received his bachelor's degree from Ohio State University in 1931 .

He joined the Foreign Service; his first foreign stations were Windsor (Ontario) , Belgrade and Bucharest ; there he married Phyllis Penn in 1935. The marriage remained childless. He later served in Athens , Cairo , Vietnam and Bolivia .

In 1946 Kohler studied Russian at Cornell University and worked from 1947 to 1949 in Moscow under Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith .

In 1967 he retired and moved to Florida, where he taught at the University of Miami .
