Franconian costume refers to the typical costumes in the Franconian region .

Many Franconian costumes have their roots in the Baroque period . Components of the men's costume are mostly the Franconian hat as a three-cornered hat and / or with a cord and the knotted scarf. Usually knee breeches made of fabric or leather are worn, along with vests and long skirts. There is an even greater variety in the women's costume than in the men's costume. The wearing of a bodice skirt and apron is consistent. In summer a colorful shawl is usually used, in winter the hat, a long-sleeved jacket. There is a wide variety of hoods for headgear, but also colorful headscarves.

The traditional costumes in Franconia are characterized by a small variety. This is also because the population was denominationally mixed due to the political conditions in the Franconian Empire until the end of the Holy Roman Empire . The costumes differ in their character, whereby the costumes of the Catholics are usually more colorful and eye-catching than those in the Protestant areas. While there is a greater consistency in the cuts, the colors are usually more muted and the jewelry kept simple.

Franconian costume and the traditional costume movement

The former Reichsdorf Sennfeld near Schweinfurt is an old center of Franconian costume . Franconian costumes have always been worn at the Sennfelder and Gochsheim peace festivals . After the traditional costume preservation associations in other parts of Franconia often only cultivated the Upper Bavarian mountain costume, in recent decades, as in many areas of Bavaria, attempts have been made to keep local costumes and peculiarities alive ( old costume ) or to revive them ( renewed costume ) or historical traditions in Calling a reminder ( historical costume ). The “Renewed Costumes of Franconian Switzerland ” presented between 1967 and 1975 were an important step .

Strengthening and spreading awareness of regionally influenced clothing styles in a larger environment is the concern of the Central Franconian Trachten Research and Advice Center under the heading “Pro Tracht”, a fashionable costume for a new Franconian identity. The implementation takes place through further development of the historical costume or at least its elements in a regionally-based clothing form that is functionally and creatively adapted to today's conditions and wearing habits. A contemporary wearable costume associates regionality and homeland and thus leads to an individual, identity-forming community feeling.
