Franconian drying plate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fränkische Trockenplatte describes an area with little rain in Lower Franconia ( Bavaria ).

location

The landscape with Schweinfurt in the center is surrounded by several low mountain ranges, in the west the Spessart , in the north the Rhön and in the southeast the Steigerwald .

Origin of the name

This encirclement has the consequence that attracting clouds usually already rain down in the low mountain ranges and thus do not reach the Franconian dry plate. The amount of precipitation here is very low in comparison with approx. 500 mm per year. Place names such as waterless bear witness to this fact.

Viticulture

Due to the dry climate, the number of hours of sunshine is significantly greater. Therefore, the region has always been a wine-growing area .

particularities

The Ellertshauser lake was originally dammed as a water reservoir for the surrounding communities to irrigate the fields. However, it turned out that the irrigation systems would have been too expensive. Thus, today it is mainly used as a local recreation area.
