Frédéric Damé

Frédéric Damé (born March 29, 1849 in Tonnerre , † 1907 in Bucharest ) was a French- Romanian Romanian , historian, grammarian and lexicographer.

Life

Damé was the son of a lawyer. In Paris he published literary magazines from 1868 to 1870 and took part in intellectual life as a journalist. Lautréamont named him among the twelve addressees of his poésies .

Damé's sister was married to a Romanian lawyer, and one of his acquaintances was the Romanian Bonifaciu Florescu (1848–1899) during his time in Paris .

In 1872 Damé emigrated to Romania, became bilingual and worked as a journalist and French teacher in the vicinity of Ulysse de Marsillac (1821–1877), Nicolae Ionescu (1820–1905), Ion Luca Caragiale and Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu . He was co-founder of the newspaper L'Indépendance roumaine and from 1884 to 1886 its editor-in-chief. Damé created an important Romanian-French dictionary with 40,000 entries. He obtained Romanian citizenship.
