Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu

Bogdan Hasdeu Petriceicu (* 26. February 1838 in Kerstentsi , Bessarabia Governorate ; † 25. August 1907 in Câmpina ) was a Romanian politician, writer, historian, linguist , Rumänist and ethnologist .

life and work

Tadeu Hasdeu was the son of the writer Alexandru Hâjdeu (1811–1872). In 1857 he took the name Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu. He studied law in Kharkiv and fought as a Russian hussar in the Crimean War . As a high school teacher and bookseller he lived in Iași from 1858 and in Bucharest from 1863 .

Hasdeu pursued wide-ranging research interests in Romanian history and philology, was involved in politics and was active as a writer. In 1876 he became archivist, and in 1878 professor of comparative linguistics at the University of Bucharest .

The early death of his gifted daughter Iulia Hasdeu (1869–1888) drove him into the arms of spiritualism . In her memory he had a castle built in Câmpina with the "Castelul Iulia Hasdeu", in which a Hasdeu museum was set up.

In 1877 he was elected to the Romanian Academy , which later named a prize after him. In the Republic of Moldova , the Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu State University in Cahul, founded in 1999, is named after him, as is the Chișinău City Library . Schools in Iași and Buzău bear his name.
