Chișinău City Library
The Biblioteca Municipala Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu is the municipal library of the Moldovan city of Chișinău, founded in 1944 . In 1997 there were a total of 1.7 million volumes, 314 employees worked in 14 branches. From 1990 to 1992 a total of five branch libraries were opened, which, in cooperation with the respective countries of origin, provide Ukrainian, Yiddish, Bulgarian, Russian and Gagauz literature. In 1998 more than 1,600 exhibitions were held.
The budget for literature acquisition in 1999 was one million lei . Only 30% of the purchases can be made from your own budget, the rest is financed from (mainly Romanian) donations. This practice leads to a low inventory of specialized literature and makes it difficult to build collections.
From 1995 to 1997 the library built the “Center for Documentation and Information Chisinau” (CDI), which compiles bibliographical information about Chișinău and, for example, publishes an annual bibliography of the city. This practice has been adopted by other Moldovan public libraries.
The library houses a reading room of the Goethe Institute .
