General Legrand

Frédéric Legrand (born January 27, 1810 in Versailles , † August 16, 1870 at Mars-la-Tour ) was a French Général de division of the cavalry .

Life

Legrand joined the Hussars of the Royal Guard in 1828 . From 1830 to 1837 he served as a sergeant in the 2 e régiment de hussards . In 1837 he was promoted to Sous-lieutenant . In Algeria he was involved in the suppression of the Abd el-Kader uprising. In 1844 he became Capitaine of the Spahis, in 1850 Commandant of the "2 e régiment de chasseurs d'Afrique".

He received his first command in motherland France in 1855, when he was promoted to colonel and appointed commander of the 5 e régiment de cuirassiers . In 1860 he returned to Algeria, where he commanded the Oran region as Général de brigade . In 1865 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor . With this honor his commitment during the uprising of the Sahara tribes was recognized.

On his return to France in 1868 he was promoted to Général de division and was given command of the Perpignan region in southern France . After the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, he asked for an assignment at the front. He was given command of the cavalry of the 4th Corps, the so-called Rhine Army. On August 16, 1870, he fell at the head of his horsemen in the battle of Mars-la-Tour . He was buried in the Doncourt-lès-Conflans cemetery.
