The early gorse spanner ( Chesias rufata ), sometimes also called gorse heather silver stripe spanner , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 26 to 32 millimeters. The approximately oval shaped wings are typical of the species. The silver-gray to ash-gray middle field of the forewings is bounded inward by a mostly indistinct, narrow and outwardly by a wide, very clear red-brown transverse band. Some specimens also show a gray root field and very broad red-brown areas on both sides of the central field. The scientific name of the species from the Latin language is derived from the color : rufus = "red". There is a dark graduation line at the apex . A whitish wavy line stands out near the hem. The hind wings are colored ocher gray without drawing.
egg
The oval egg is light orange in color, has a recessed micropyl zone and is slightly spotted on the surface.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are green to gray-green or brown-green in color and show thin light dorsal and side dorsal lines as well as a wide white lateral stripe and black stigmas .
Doll
The red-brown pupa is characterized by darker wing sheaths.
Geographical distribution and occurrence
The early gorse spider occurs in large parts of Central and Western Europe, including the British Isles , and from Morocco to Asia Minor . The altitude distribution in the southern Alps is 1500 meters. The species prefers to colonize gorse heaths, bushy slopes and rocky valleys.
Way of life
The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal. The main flight time of a first generation is from April to May. However, specimens were found in March. A rarer second generation forms between June and August. Occasionally, moths suckling on pussy willow ( Salix ) or barberry blossoms ( Berberis ) have been observed. At night they also appear in artificial light sources . The majority of the caterpillars can be found from June to October and live on common broom ( Cytisus scoparius ), dyer's broom ( Genista tinctoria ) or German broom ( Genista germanica ). The pupae overwinter.
Danger
In the German federal states, the early gorse spider occurs in different frequencies and is listed in category 3 (endangered) on the red list of endangered species .
