Junior degree
The Junior Studies respectively Early studies or graduate studies (students study) is a special funding program to support particularly gifted and talented students by a university or technical college . In Germany, at most universities, it offers students from all secondary schools the opportunity to start studying parallel to school or vocational training. This type of study preparation can be found mainly in music . Young students differ from guest students in that they enjoy student status. The junior program is an instrument of gifted education and an opportunity gifted to promote.
aims
The junior course is intended to give the pupils the opportunity to gain an insight into university learning and at the same time serves as an orientation aid for the later course of study.
The objectives of the program are to take advantage of additional learning opportunities, to acquire knowledge independently , to take on personal responsibility and to take initiative , possible savings in study time and interdisciplinary learning through various departments .
Various universities and technical colleges are participating in the project, mainly in natural science subjects. The first German university to offer such a junior course was the University of Hanover in the 1999 winter semester. At the time, this applied to those doing basic military service and community service and trainees with a general university entrance qualification in order to create a smooth transition between school, work and university. Schoolchildren can now also apply. If they wish, students can also take the exams in order to acquire certificates, which can be used to save time and money in a similar area when studying at a later date. Often the student study lasts only one semester, the rules are different at the different teaching institutions. A change of subject to the next semester is possible and often useful for orientation. In cooperation with the FOM, the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung has made it possible for schoolchildren to study at one of more than 22 study locations on a scholarship.
E-learning and junior studies
Classical approaches to the junior course often collide with the subject matter to be continued in school; lessons are often canceled for the junior students. This makes it impossible for many students to participate for organizational reasons. The financial aspect can also be problematic if long trips to the university or technical college are necessary - however, there are no general or flat-rate costs such as tuition fees.
This is where concepts come in that integrate certain forms of electronic learning ( e-learning ), for example the media-supported junior course at the University of Rostock. Through so-called blended learning , the attendance phases are reduced to three appointments per semester. This allows students with financially weak parents or students living far from the university to complete a junior degree.
However, so that the quality of such a course does not suffer, more intensive supervision measures are necessary than in the regular early course. In addition to the actual lecturer, e-coaches and tele-tutors must support the process of knowledge construction. A fast internet connection is also required. Due to the fact that schools are now well equipped with computer technology, this is no longer a major obstacle.
Young music students
A young music student must plan to study music and then take up a career as a musician after graduation . He still has to do vocational training or go to school while preparing for his studies. At the beginning of the study preparation he must not be more than 19 years old. The young person must prove in an aptitude test that he is highly talented and that his current level of training is very good. He must also have the opportunity to practice intensively every day.
Young music students usually have 90 minutes of lessons per week. The courses also include piano as a second instrument, ear training , music theory and other electives.
Prominent examples
Mikko Fischer, who was the first student to complete his preliminary diploma, Felix Dietlein, who was the first student to complete a diploma in mathematics at the same time as his Abitur, and Arno Pauly, who completed his bachelor's degree in computer science at the Fernuniversität Hagen in 2003 at the age of 17, became known as school students .
