Kaunas Freight Port
The Kaunas Freight Port (lit. Kauno krovinių uostas ; Port Marvelė , lit. Marvelės uostas ) is an inland port in the second largest Lithuanian city of Kaunas . The port is located in the Marvelė district , on the left (western) bank of the Memel (lit. Nemunas ).
history
The old cargo port , built in 1970 in Žemoji Freda , was little used from 1996 and sold in 2004. In 2007 there was no freight. In 2004 the Kaunas Municipality Council decided that the new port should be in Petrašiūnai . The new city government rejected this proposal. A residential and business district was then developed in the port area.
In 2006 a feasibility study for the Klaipėda – Kaunas river was carried out by the Lithuanian Inland Navigation Authority . In June 2015, the first phase of construction will be completed with the help of EU investments worth EUR 2.8 million. The infrastructure will be built according to international requirements. A 120 m long quay and a one-hectare storage area are to be built, water pipes, internal power grids and access roads are to be created. The port is being built by the Lithuanian company UAB "Kamesta". The port operator is to be clarified in the second half of 2016 [obsolete] . They are looking for investments of 11 million euros.
