François-Jean de Chastellux

François-Jean de Chastellux (born May 5, 1734 in Paris , † October 24, 1788 ibid) was a French military and writer.

Life

De Chastellux fought under the command of Comte de Rochambeau during the American Revolutionary War . He also got to know George Washington personally and through him later also Thomas Jefferson . In 1781 he was elected to both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society .

When de Chastellux was back in France, he settled in Paris and from that time devoted himself only to his literary work. 1775 elected the Académie française de Chastellux to succeed the late playwright Jean-Baptiste Vivien de Châteaubrun ( armchair 2 ); himself followed Aimar-Charles-Marie de Nicolaï to this square.

The painter Charles Willson Peale created a remarkable portrait of François-Jean de Chastellux.
