De Nicolaï was an official in the royal administration. He experienced the climax of his career with his appointment as director of the Chambre des comptes (financial administration).

In 1788 de Nicolaï was admitted to the Académie française as the successor to François-Jean de Chastellux ( armchair 2 ). On the occasion of his admission, de Nicolaï wrote an eulogy to King Louis XIV and also delivered it publicly. For this "offense" he was later declared an enemy of the people during the reign of terror of the French Revolution and guillotined on July 7, 1794 . Due to the political events, his successor François de Neufchâteau was only elected in 1803.
