François Descurain

François Descurain Jr. (* August 22, 1653 in Étampes ; † March 17 or 18, 1740 ) was a French pharmacist and botanist .

François Descurain Jr. from Étampes near Paris was the son of the pharmacist François Descurain sen. and his wife, Cantienne Ramon.

He studied medicine and also completed a pharmaceutical training in Paris but returned to Étampes after the death of his father to take over his pharmacy. His daughter was Marie-Françoise Descurain.

Because of his botanical interests, Descurain made friends with Bernard de Jussieu and his brother Antoine de Jussieu . He also exchanged letters and regular meetings with other pharmacists and with doctors and teachers in order to exchange ideas with them about philological and scientific topics. Descurain wrote a flora of his hometown Étampes, which he did not publish himself. His daughter Marie-Françoise Descurain married Jean Guettard (1691–1742) on July 26, 1706, their son Jean-Étienne Guettard (1715–1786) continued the botanical studies of his maternal grandfather, François Descurain jr., And wrote a. a. the book entitled Observations sur les plantes (2 volumes, Paris 1747).

Dedication names

In honor of Descurain, the botanists Philip Barker Webb (1793–1854) and Sabin Berthelot (1794–1880) gave the common berries , a genus of the cruciferous family , the scientific name Descurainia .
