François Louis Rousselet de Château-Renault
François Louis de Rousselet, Marquis de Château-Renault (also: Châteaurenault, Châteaurenaut or Châteauregnaud) (born September 22, 1637 in Château-Renault ; † November 15, 1716 in Paris ) was a French nobleman, marshal and vice admiral .
In 1689 he was the commander of the French fleet at the sea meeting at Bantry Bay . He was one of the French squadron commanders in the Battle of Beachy Head . In the War of the Spanish Succession he became Vice Admiral in 1701 and commanded the French fleet in the naval battle of Vigo . The battle was a complete defeat and its flagship, La Forte, burned up with most of the fleet.
On April 12, 1704 he became Lieutenant de Haute et Basse Bretagne.
Honors
On February 2, 1705 he was made Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit . The French Navy named 3 cruisers after him,
- Cruiser Châteaurenault from 1884 - used in the Battle of Fuzhou in 1884.
- Armored cruiser Châteaurenault in service from 1895 until the torpedoing in 1917
- Cruiser Châteaurenault , in service from 1948 to 1962, built as the Italian Attilio Regolo of the Capitani Romani class.
