Michaelmas fair

The Michaelismesse is a traditional folk festival in the Lower Franconian town of Miltenberg . It takes place annually from the last weekend in August to the first Sunday in September. The Michaelismesse is considered to be the largest folk festival on the Bavarian Lower Main . A Michaelmas fair takes place every year in the city of Wertheim am Main.

The origin of the Michaelism Mass goes back to the year 1367. At the request of the Archbishop of Mainz, Gerlach von Nassau , Emperor Charles IV granted the city the right on January 6, 1367 to hold an annual market. Originally the mass took place between the feast day of Saint Sixtus II on August 7th and the Assumption of the Virgin . It was not placed on Michaelmas Day on September 29th in 1425 and has been named after the Archangel Michael ever since . Over the years, in addition to the trade fair, an amusement festival has developed.

Traditionally, the two local breweries Faust and Kalt-Loch-Bräu alternated annually in the production of the fair beer. After the Kalt-Loch-Bräu in Miltenberg ceased brewing in March 2010, only the Faust brewery still delivers.
