François Tousignant

François Tousignant (born April 26, 1955 in Montreal ; † March 26, 2019 ) was a Canadian composer and music critic.

Tousignant studied at the University of Ottawa with Luis de Pablo , at the École normal de musique in Paris with Max Deutsch and at the University of Montreal with Serge Garant . In 1982 his composition Durée won second prize at the Sir Ernest MacMillan Award / Fellowship of the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada (CAPAC).

In 1984 he composed a mass that was performed on the occasion of a visit by Pope John Paul II to Ottawa. In 1984/85 he was musical director of a series of concerts for contemporary music in the Maison du Citoyen in Hull / Québec. With a scholarship from the University of Ottawa, he studied at IRCAM from 1986 to 1987 .

After Tousignant had had a teaching position at the University of Ottawa from 1986 to 1988, he became a professor at the University of Montreal in 1988 . In addition to his compositions, in which he mainly worked with serial technology , Tousignant was also known as a music critic for the magazine Le Devoir .
