François Verwilt (* approx. 1623 in Rotterdam ; † 1691 ibid) was a Dutch painter .

Life

As the son of the painter Adriaen Verwilt (Antwerp 1582–1639). It is certain that Verwilt was a pupil of Cornelis van Poelenburgh (1586–1667) from Utrecht with Johann Liss , Jan Baptist Weenix , Jan van Haensbergen and Daniel Vertangen . Verwilt did not specialize exclusively in the history and landscape painting of his teacher. He painted a number of religious biblical scenes in landscapes such as Poelenburgh, including a number of pictures of the Virgin Mary, which were intended more for Catholic (probably Flemish) customers, but also bourgeois interiors of festivals and games as well as scenes of peasant genre painting . There are also portraits and still lifes . His coloring is cool enamel-like, but later he also painted pictures in the manner of Rembrandt with chiaroscuro effects in shades of brown. Main activity in Utrecht and Rotterdam, where he lived all his life. He also worked for a short time in Middelburg (Zeeland) and was a member of the Guild of St Luke . His students were Cornelis Cingelaar and Peter Hovius.

His pictures are in museums in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Budapest, Leningrad, Mainz, Osnabrück, Paris, Vienna. There is no detailed biography or monograph on his works.
