from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

François de Clermont-Tonnerre (* 1629 ; † February 15, 1701 in Paris ) was Bishop and Count of Noyon .

Life

François de Clermont-Tonnerre was the second son of the Count of Clermont and Tonnerre, François de Clermont-Tonnerre , Lieutenant General of Bourgogne, and Marie Vignier (1603–1679), daughter of the President of the Burgundian Diet (États de Bourgogne), Jacques Vignier . He studied with the Jesuits in Paris and received his doctorate in theology from the Sorbonne . Appointed Bishop and Count of Noyon and Peer of France in 1660 , he received episcopal ordination on October 2, 1661. In 1694 he became a member of the Académie française . In 1695 he presided over the National Assembly of the French clergy.

In his memoirs ( Mémoires ), Saint-Simon primarily describes Clermont-Tonnerre's oversized vanity, which seems to have been his most prominent quality. His only personal merit after Vedrenne ( Fauteuils de l'Académie française , Paris 1887/88) was his doctorate, all other honors, including his seat in the Académie , were due to his noble birth.
