Françoise Chandernagor

Françoise Chandernagor (born June 15, 1945 in Palaiseau ) is a French writer and was formerly a high civil servant.

Chandernagor went to school in Sceaux , earned a diploma from the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and a maîtrise in public law and studied from 1966 at the École nationale d'administration , which she graduated two years later as the best of her class. From 1969 she was in the Conseil d'État , where she had various functions, including Rapporteur Général. In 1991 she published the annual report on legal certainty. She was also in the diplomatic service and held positions in foundations (from 1988 she was Vice President of the Fondaton de France). In 1994 she gave up her public service career to become a writer.

Her first novel L'Allée du Roi was published in 1981 and was about the fictional memories of Madame de Maintenon . Further historical and other novels followed, for example about Louis Charles de Bourbon (Le Chambre), a trilogy of novels La Reine oubliée about Cleopatra Selene (Les Enfants d'Alexandrie, Les Dames de Rome) and about one of the brothers of Jesus.

She also wrote a play and essays. Her play was performed with Jacqueline Bir in 1993/94 and 2008 in Brussels and 1994/95 with Geneviève Casile and 2009 with Marie-Christine Barrault in Paris. Two of her novels were filmed for television (Allée du Roi and l'Enfant des Lumières).

She is an officer of the Legion of Honor and received the Grand Cross of the Ordre national du mérite. Since 1995 she has been a member of the Académie Goncourt , which awards the Goncourt Prize.

She is married to Philippe Jurgensen and has three children. She lives in Paris and the Limousin . Her family name comes from India (her family came from a freed Indian slave).
