François vase
The so-called François Vase , also Klitiaskrater called, is one in the Attic black- painted style volute krater , which in the second quarter of the v sixth century. Chr. Was made in Athens. It was found in 1844 by the Italian engineer, painter and archaeologist Alessandro François in a grave near Chiusi and is now in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Florence (inv. No. 4209).
According to inscriptions, the François vase was made by the potter Ergotimos and painted by the vase painter Klitias . The main theme of the painting is the depiction of the procession of the gods to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis . In terms of the composition and design of the figures, the François vase is one of the most important works of art in highly Archaic-Attic ceramics. Compared to earlier and contemporary Greek clay craters, it also stands out due to its size (H 0.66 m).
