Mario Torelli (born  May 12, 1937 in Rome ) is an Italian archaeologist and etrusologist . He was most recently Professor of Classical Archeology and Ancient History at the University of Perugia and has been in retirement since 2010.

life and work

Torelli graduated from the University of La Sapienza in Rome in 1960 with a degree in Classical Literature with summa cum laude and wrote a thesis entitled Falerii Veteres on ancient Falerii . From 1960 to 1962 he was assistant to the Center for Antiquities and Art History of the Middle East (Centro per le Antichità e la Storia dell'Arte del Vicino Oriente) under the direction of Massimo Pallottino and Sabatino Moscati . From 1964 to 1969 he was archaeological inspector at the superintendent for antiquities of southern Etruria ( Soprintendenza alle Antichità dell'Etruria Meridionale). During this time he was u. a. responsible for the museum of Villa Giulia in Rome and the excavations in Veii and Gravisca .

In 1969 Torelli received a chair in archeology and history of Greek and Roman art at the University of Cagliari , which he held until 1973. Until 1975 he taught in Cagliari as an associate professor . In 1975 he moved to the University of Perugia, where he also taught as an associate professor. In 1976 he received a professorship in Perugia, where he taught until 2010 as a full professor of archeology and the history of Greek and Roman art. In addition, he received teaching positions for the archeology of Magna Graecia (1995-2000) and for Etruscan and Italian archeology (2000-2010).

Torelli was involved in excavations in the villa of Nero of Subiaco (1957), in the Roman city of Trebula Mutuesca near Monteleone Sabino (1958-1959), in the Nubian cities of Sabagura and Ikhmindi (1960) and in the necropolis of Veii (1961) . He led the excavations of the Etruscan Menrva sanctuary of Punta della Vipera near Santa Marinella (1964–1966), the Etruscan sanctuary of Porta Caere in Veii (1966–1969), the Greek sanctuary of Gravisca, the old port of Tarquinia (1969–1969) 1979), the Venus sanctuary at Paestum (1982–1985), the Demeter sanctuary (1985–1986) and the Agora of Herakleia (1987–1991). Between 1990 and 1991, Torelli spent an academic year as a guest at the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities in Santa Monica .

From 1976 to 1987 Torelli was director of the Institute of Archeology (Istituto di Archeologia) of the University of Perugia and from 1994 to 1997 of the Institute for Comparative Studies on Ancient Societies (Istituto di Studi Comparati sulle Società Antiche) and since 1999 coordinator of the Comparative Studies Section on ancient societies of the Department of Historical-Artistic Studies (Studi Comparati sulle Società Antiche del Dipartimento di Studi Storico-Artistici) . From 2001 he coordinated the Center of Excellence for the Diagnostics of Cultural Heritage (Centro di Eccellenza per la Diagnostica dei Beni Culturali) established by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research at the University of Perugia. Torelli participated in numerous archaeological exhibitions in Italy and abroad. On the occasion of the Italian "Year of the Etruscans" (Anno degli Etruschi) , he coordinated the nine associated exhibitions in Tuscany in 1985 . In 2000 he designed the exhibition "The Etruscans" (Gli Etruschi) in the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, which took place between November 2000 and July 2001. In 2006 he curated the exhibition “ The Iliad(L'Iliade) at the Colosseum in Rome .

Torelli wrote numerous articles for the daily and magazine press. From 1981 to 1988 he worked regularly as a writer for the daily newspaper Il Messaggero in Rome. Since 1992 he has been editor of the scientific journal Ostraka . Between 2000 and 2001 he worked as a writer for the daily La Stampa in Turin . Torelli has given lectures at universities and research institutes in Italy, France, England, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Romania, the United States, Canada and Australia and has been used for congresses, study conferences and international seminars in Italy, France, Germany, England, the United States, Spain, Finland, Bulgaria and the former Czechoslovakia were invited. In 2014 Torelli received the Balzan Prize of the International Balzan Foundation, which has been awarded to outstanding scientists and personalities from the world of art and culture since 1961.
