Sabatino Moscati
Sabatino Moscati (born November 24, 1922 in Rome ; † September 8, 1997 ibid) was an Italian linguist and archaeologist who has made a name for himself in researching the Phoenician - Punic language, culture and archeology.
Life
Sabatino Moscati received his doctorate in 1943, at the age of 21, with a thesis on the Arabic spoken in medieval Spain . In 1954, at the age of only 32, he became a full professor of Semitic linguistics and philology at La Sapienza University in Rome. Within a short time he developed into an important organizer of his science, understanding it primarily as a holistic cultural science. At his instigation and for him, the Institute for the Study of the Middle East was created by his faculty after only a short time . The institute for research into Phoenician and Punic culture , which is subordinate to the Centro Nazionale delle Ricerche , followed shortly afterwards . At the first congress for research on Phoenician and Punic culture in 1979, Moscati gave the opening speech. At that time, five Italian universities were already offering courses in the new subject of Phoenician Studies . Moscati must be considered one of the founders of this discipline.
Moscati was not only a science organizer and representative of his science, he was also a mediator between science and the general public. He began his career as a linguist, but in the course of his career turned more and more to the archaeological remains, the Near East Archeology , without ever neglecting the written sources. His oeuvre comprises more than 570 titles, including well over 80 monographs for which he was responsible, either alone or as a co-author. In 1985 he founded the Italian glossy magazine Archeo , in which knowledgeable authors use high-quality images to make archaeological findings available to a broad public. In 1988 he organized a large and successful exhibition on the Phoenicians at Palazzo Grassi in Venice .
The Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome honors Moscati by awarding the Premio Moscati for studies of the civilizations of the Mediterranean region .
