Francesc Alió i Brea (born March 27, 1862 in Barcelona ; † March 31, 1908 there ) was a Catalan composer, pianist and musicologist. He was one of the leading musical personalities of the Catalan Renaixença cultural movement of the late 19th century. In 1892 he wrote the music for today's Catalan national anthem Els Segadors as a new harmonization on an old folk song.

life and work

Alió studied piano with Carles Vidiella and composition with Anselm Barba , Antoni Nicolau and Felip Pedrell . His Six Melodies for Voice and Piano from 1887, together with the cycle La Primavera by Felip Pedrell, form the first examples of the Catalan song ( El lied català ). In the same year he also published his Five Songs for Voice and Piano . In these compositions Alió turned poems by Àngel Guimerà , Francesc Matheu i Fornells , Apel·les Mestres and Jacint Verdaguer into music.

In magazines such as La Renaixença , L'Avenç and El Poble Català , he published music reviews in a spirit that was open to modernity. As a musicologist he collected Catalan folk songs and published them in 1891 in the Cançons populars catalanes in his own arrangement, some with piano accompaniment. Through his work, the Catalan folk song found a new anchor in the middle class. Catalan folk music inspired many of his compositions.
