Francesco Colombini

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francesco Colombini (* 13 February 1588 in Massa (Tuscany) ; † 4. August 1671 ) was an Italian composer of the Baroque and canon in his hometown.

Life

Colombini was the son of a pharmacist; from 1623 to 1671 he was canon at the church of S. Pietro in Massa. During the same period he held the office of organist, as the title of his collection of " Missae et motecta " from 1620 clearly shows: "a Massa principis Maioris Ecclesiae eiusdem loci Organistae". In a letter from the Duke to his wife in Genoa from December 1618, he also expressed himself positively about his new organist. Colombini had apparently made a name for himself with the publication of two motets , which are contained in his collection “ Sacrae Cantiones ” (published in 1615 by the publisher Ricciardo Amadino in Venice). Colombini's work can be seen in connection with the musical interests at the court of Duke Carlo Cybo Malaspina of Massa and Carrara . This promoted music, theater and art in his royal seat in a special way.

Colombini's successive collections, which appeared several times both in Venice and with Antwerp publishers, show the admiration for his music at the time. Several of his masses and motets are also listed in the archives of Malta Cathedral . In his “Secondo libro de Madrigali concertati”, which he dedicated to the daughter of his patron Vittoria Cybo with poetic verses from Giovanni Battista Guarini . Some doubts about Colombini's authorship arise in works for keyboard instruments (correnti, canzoni, sonatas, "ecchi" in intabulatura) in a German manuscript from Turin, although the name Colombini is noted here, but Francesco Colombano, organist of the collegiate church in Gallarate to be the composer.
