Francesco Colonna (* 1433/1434 in Venice ; † 1527 there ) was an Italian writer .

Life

In 1499 the novel Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (Poliphilo's dream story about the fight for his love) was published , which is not undisputedly attributed to this Venetian Francesco Colonna. This print by Aldo Manuzio (Latinized Aldus Manutius) was originally published anonymously. The book has 234 unnumbered sheets and is illustrated with a total of 171 woodcuts by an unknown master.

From Albrecht Dürer to Gian Lorenzo Bernini , the book has had a strong impact on the visual arts. It was influential in literature, for example B. on François Rabelais and his novel Gargantua et Pantagruel . It should also have inspired the initial constellation of Honoré d'Urfé 's shepherd novel L'Astrée : a past but not unhappy childhood love. The authorship of Francesco Colonna on this novel is disputed. Another possibility is another Francesco Colonna, who was an educated nobleman based in Palestrina near Rome. This is supported by the precise knowledge of the architecture of Palestrina, to which this Roman Francesco Colonna also set a monument with his writing.

The book is about the dream of Poliphilus. In a dream, Poliphilus wanders through the ideal garden of the love island Kythera . The garden is a fantasy by Francesco Colonna, but it is filled with the architectural realities of Palestrina. The garden is viewed as an overworld, a symbolic universe.
