The monk surgeonfish ( Acanthurus gahhm ), also known as Gahhms surgeonfish , is endemic to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden .
features
The monk doctor fish is blackish in color and is 40 to 50 cm long and has a longitudinally oval, laterally flattened body. A conspicuous, vertical white band marks the beginning of the caudal fin. The dorsal and anal fins are rounded. In the caudal fin, however, the ends are drawn out so that they form a sickle. As is typical for doctor fish, the monk doctor fish also has a terminal mouth.

Way of life
The monk doctor fish lives in small or large groups over sand and rubble in lagoons or on outer reefs at depths of 5 to 40 meters. It feeds on algae, detritus and zooplankton .
