Francesco Ferrara (born December 7, 1810 in Palermo , † January 22, 1900 in Venice ) was an Italian economist .

Life

Ferrara became head of the Statistical Bureau of Sicily in 1834 and founded the "Giornale di Statistica". Since he had participated in the movement for the independence of Sicily in 1847, he was imprisoned in the Citadelle of Palermo, but released the following year and elected a member of the provisional government. Sent to Turin to offer the crown of Sicily to the Duke of Genoa, he stayed here after the end of the revolution and, at Cavour's suggestion, took over the chair of economics at the University of Turin and later at the University of Pisa . Appointed finance minister to the Rattazzi cabinet in 1867, but resigned after a few months, he continued to play an active role in shaping Italian finances as a member of the Chamber's finance commission , currently the Senate . From 1868 he was director of the upper commercial school in Venice.
