The Paro Airport ( IATA code : PBH , ICAO code : VQPR ; Dzongkha: སྤ་ རོ་ གནམ་ ཐང་) is an airport in Bhutan and also the only international of the country, about 65 kilometers drive distance west of the capital Thimphu area. Paro Airport is located at an altitude of 2236 m in a deep valley ( Paro Valley ), about six kilometers southeast of Paro .
In addition to Paro Airport, Bhutan also has the national airports of Yongphull , Bathpalathang and Gelephu .
history
The airport opened in 1968 in the Paro Valley. Initially it was only used for occasional flights by Indian helicopters until, between 1978 and 1980, various smaller aircraft were tested that had good maneuverability and should be able to fly to Calcutta and back without refueling. After Drukair was founded in 1981, flight operations began on February 11, 1983 with a Do 228-200 , twice a week from Paro to Calcutta. In 1986 a route was added to Dhaka in Bangladesh, as well as to Kathmandu in 1987, to Delhi in 1988 and to Bangkok in 1989. In 1990 the runway was extended from 1400 m to 1964 m and in 1999 a new terminal building was opened, which was financed by the Indian government.
Infrastructure
The airport, with a 1964 meter long runway (15/33), used to be used only by the monopoly airline Drukair , which is both the owner and operator of all facilities. Since August 2010, the Nepalese Buddha Air is the second airline to operate the airport from Kathmandu . The private Bhutan Airlines connect Paro with Delhi , Kolkata and Gaya (India) as well as Kathmandu and Bangkok , flights to Dhaka , Yangon and Singapore are planned for the future. The approach to the airport is considered difficult and only suitable for experienced pilots and, due to the confusing terrain, has to be mastered on the last stretch as a pure flight on sight without instrument guidance systems.
It has a passenger and a cargo terminal. There are four counters and a gate in the passenger terminal . In 2002 37,151 passengers arrived or departed here; the last cargo throughput was 90,983 tons.
