A work by Spinacino from the lute book

Francesco Spinacino (* 2nd half of the 15th century in Fossombrone , † after 1507 probably in Venice ) was an Italian lutenist and composer . His two lute books are among the oldest Italian lute tablatures .

Spinacino's works were published in two of four lute books Intabulatura de Lauto by Ottaviano dei Petrucci - the first ever printed books on the lute. They contain 27 ricercari , 2 bassedance and 52 lute arrangements. In an arrangement for two lutes by Johannes Ghiselins Joli Amours , the term "Recercare" is used for the first time. Both books contain a brief introduction to tablature notation.

Spinacinos Ricercari are quite complex and in free form for the time; virtuoso and imitative passages often alternate .
