Francesco De Geronimo , German: Franz de Hieronymo (* December 17, 1642 in Grottaglie ; † May 11, 1716 in Naples ), was an Italian Jesuit and is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Franz de Hieronymo was one of the leading people's missionaries of his time. Had it gone according to his own wishes, he would have worked as a missionary in the Far East, but his superiors wanted him to work as a people's missionary in Naples. Tradition describes his preaching as convincing and inspiring. Several thousand pages have been preserved from his sermons , giving a very detailed insight into the homiletic practice of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Franz de Hieronymo founded social aid organizations for girls, young women, workers and convicts at risk. After his death he was buried in the place of his birth. His beatification took place in 1806, and he was canonized in 1836.
