Francis Bicknell Carpenter (born August 6, 1830 in Homer (New York) , † May 23, 1900 in New York City ) was an American portrait painter .

Carpenter showed great artistic talent at an early age, became a student of Sandford Thayer, initially painted portraits in his hometown and settled in New York City in 1851, where he was accepted as an Associate Member ( ANA ) of the National Academy of Design a year later . In addition to numerous portraits of distinguished people in New York and other cities, his greatest work was the proclamation of slave emancipation , which caused a sensation in 1864 and 1865, is characteristic in the individual figures and groups, but as a whole lacks the higher ideal momentum .
