Francis Cairns

Francis Cairns (* 20th century) is a British classical philologist .

Life

After completing his MA in Classics in 1961 at the University of Glasgow , Cairns moved to Oxford University , where he obtained a BA in Literae humaniores at Balliol College in 1963 . In the same year he became Assistant Lecturer in Humanity (Latin) at the University of Edinburgh , from 1966 to 1973 he was a lecturer there. In 1968, meanwhile, he obtained an MA from Oxford University. From 1974 to 1988 he was Professor of Latin (established Chair) at the University of Liverpool . In 1982 he received his doctorate there . From 1989 to 1999 he was Professor of Latin Language and Literature at the University of Leeds , and from 1999 to 2001 Research Professor of Latin Language and Literature there. Since 2000 he has been Professor of Classical Languages ​​at Florida State University .

Cairns conducts research on Roman poetry from the Republican and Augustan periods ( Catullus , Horace , Virgil , Roman Elegy, Tibullus , Properz ), Hellenistic poetry ( Callimachus , Apollonios of Rhodes , Theocritus , epigram ), Medieval Latin and Renaissance Latin and epigraphy the Greek island of Euboia . He also deals with computer-aided learning.

Cairns has also been running Francis Cairns Publications since 1976 .
