Francis Ford (1917)

Francis Ford (born August 14, 1881 in Portland , Maine , † September 5, 1953 in Los Angeles , California; actually Frank Thomas Feeney ) was an American film actor, screenwriter and director. He was the older brother of director John Ford .

Life

Francis Ford has acted in over 400 films, mostly in the western genre. In the early silent film era, he was one of the most renowned western actors. He played the main character of General Custer as early as 1912 in the film Custer's Last Fight by director Thomas Harper Ince (he later also had a minor role in the 1941 Custer saga His last command from Raoul Walsh ). After director Ince had primarily worked as a producer, Francis Ford also took on directing duties for the western films released by Ince in the 1910s.

Francis Ford brought his younger brother John Ford into the film business and gave him his first engagements. In the later sound films of his younger brother John, he was often seen in supporting roles. One of Francis Ford's best-known sound film roles was his portrayal of a confused old man who fell victim to a lynch mob in the historically significant, but not very successful Western Ritt zum Ox-Bow by William A. Wellman in 1943 .
