Georg Ludwig Kriegk

Georg Ludwig Kriegk (born February 25, 1805 in Darmstadt ; † May 28, 1878 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German historian and archivist.

Kriegk studied history and philology in Heidelberg and Giessen . In 1825 he came to Frankfurt am Main as private tutor for the Bernus patrician family . In 1834 he received his doctorate in Marburg ; he settled in Frankfurt as a private scholar.

He was a member of numerous scientific associations, including the Geographical Association , of which he was one of the founders in 1836, the Physical Association , the Senckenberg Natural Research Society, and the Frankfurt Association for History and Archeology . His special interests were geography , ethnology and archeology . On his initiative, the systematic excavations of the ancient Roman city of Nida in the area of ​​today's Heddernheim began .

In 1848 he became professor of history at the municipal high school and chairman of the school reform association. From 1848 to 1849 he was a member of the Constituent Assembly of the Free City of Frankfurt . In 1848 he was a member of the preliminary parliament .

From 1860 he worked in the Frankfurt city archives , in 1863 he left high school and became city archivist. Under his direction, the archival material was first sorted, inventoried and made available as sources for scientific research through the writings on Frankfurt history he published. In addition, he wrote numerous works on the history of the medieval city republics and on Goethe research . In 1875 he retired for health reasons. For a time he was a member of the Frankfurt Freemason Lodge Zur Einigkeit .

Kriegk died on May 28, 1878 in Frankfurt am Main. His grave is in the main cemetery . A street in the Frankfurt district of Gallus and here the cultural institution was named "kriegkstr12" after Kriegk.
