action

The USA in World War II : Stan and Ollie work in a detective's office - but only as cleaning men, they are not even allowed to carry out assignments, although that would be their big dream. One day the office phone rings while they are cleaning and they answer because none of the detectives is present: The inventor Alva P. Hartley explains on the phone that he has developed a bomb of great explosive power, which he only calls the Big Noise ("big bang ") is called. Hartley calls in two bodyguards from the office for his bomb, whereupon Stan and Ollie see their chance and pretend to be detectives.

Stan and Ollie are looking forward to moving into the inventor's house, as they will find free tasting and accommodation there. However, you keep struggling with the eccentric behavior of the Hartleys. Aunt Sophie, who has been married five times, expresses her romantic interest in Ollie, while the cheeky nephew Egbert makes life difficult for them. But Stan and Ollie are not easy either, so Stan ruins a spring painting by Carl Spitzweg with an invention by Hartley. Meanwhile, criminal spies live in the neighboring house who have been planning to steal the bomb for a long time. When the Charlton couple, who lead the group, refuse to risk the bomb theft, they are tied up by their henchmen Hartman and Dutchy. Mrs. Charlton's niece Evelyn - who had previously had no idea of the criminal conspiracy - can just warn Mr. Hartley, who is romantically interested in Evelyn.

Hartman and Dutchy break into the Hartley's house, but Stan and Ollie temporarily lock them in the toilet. Hartley sends Stan and Ollie to the capital Washington with what appears to be a dummy bomb , but the two bombs were mixed up, so Stan and Ollie unknowingly carry the real bomb around with them and treat it roughly. When they hitchhike to Washington, the two gangsters track them down, but Stan and Ollie escape during a police check. They flee into a plane that is remote-controlled and is supposed to be shot down by the army during a target practice. With the parachute Stan and Ollie can just escape. They drop Hartley's bomb while sliding down onto an enemy Japanese submarine.

reception

The reviews in 1944 were mixed. Bosley Crowther certified the comedians in the New York Times that they weren't as funny as they used to be: “A long time ago it was funny to see them struggle with wet paint and folding beds. But now it's boring and pathetic. And it doesn't even seem to bother them. ”Other reviews, on the other hand, said The Big Noise was amusing, especially for children. At the box office, it was one of the few commercial hits for the duo among their late films. For example, the film was shown again in cinemas in 1954.

The film service saw The Big Bang as a weaker late work by the comedians. This opinion of The Big Noise is widespread, and the film is even featured in Michael Medved's 1978 book The Fifty Worst Films of All Time . For a long time, the film was undisputedly the duo's worst film, although many fans now appreciate the film, as it contains numerous comedy routines from their earlier short films.

The All Movie Guide wrote that the film had numerous weaknesses and the increasing age of Stan and Ollie was slowly becoming visible here, but the film had a good final gag and was not as bad as its reputation. The Movie Blog ruled that the completely overloaded plot was the biggest problem, with only 70 minutes in length there were too many subplots. Nonetheless, the Movie Blog also agreed that the film was not as bad as its reputation.
