Philip Van Zandt
Philip Van Zandt (* 4. October 1904 in Amsterdam as Philip Pinheiro ; † 15. February 1958 in Los Angeles , California ) was a Dutch - American actor .
life and career
Philip Van Zandt was born in Amsterdam in 1904, the exact time of his move to America is unknown. He himself stated that he moved there in his early youth and that he visited Hollywood when he was 15. Other sources say that he did not come to the United States until the late 1920s, when he had already gained acting experience in his home country. In June 1931 he made his Broadway debut in the comedy A Regular Guy , where he appeared in ten other productions until 1938. Then he turned to the film business.
Between 1939 and 1958 Van Zandt appeared in nearly 250 film and television productions in Hollywood, which made him a very busy actor, although his roles were mostly small in nature. How he was cast often depended on whether he wore his thin mustache: without him he was cast as the average guy, with this one as the villain. In many short films he was seen as an opponent of the Three Stooges , often as a criminal, grouch or mad scientist. In the comedies Air Raid Wardens (1943) and The Big Noise (1944) he also mimed opponents of Laurel and Hardy . During the Second World War , because of his European origins, he often played enemy spies or officers in propaganda films , for example in Tarzan and the Nazis . He made his mark in film history in 1941 through a small but important role in Citizen Kane : At the beginning of the film, Van Zandt played the editor-in-chief of the news program, who sent the young reporter off on a search for the meaning of the word "rosebud".
A drama school he founded remained unsuccessful, while Van Zandt gambled away all of his fortune through gambling addiction in the 1950s. He died in February 1958 at the age of 53 from suicide with an overdose of sleeping pills.
