Francis Peabody Magoun
Francis Peabody Magoun (born January 6, 1895 in New York City , † June 5, 1979 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) was an American professor of literature . He published on the Middle Ages and the history of football and translated some important texts.
Life
Magoun was born into a wealthy family in New York City. His parents were Francis Peabody Magoun (1865–1928) and Jeanne C. Bartholow (1870–1957). Although he came from the United States, he served in the British Air Force ( Royal Flying Corps , later Royal Air Force ) as a lieutenant during World War I. He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) in June 1918 .
After returning to the United States in 1919, he taught comparative literature at Harvard University ; during this time he received his PhD in philology with a dissertation in 1923. In 1931 Magoun was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
In 1937 he became a professor of general and comparative literature and in 1951 professor of English . He worked until 1961.
