Francis Robinson (historian)

Francis Christopher Rowland Robinson (born November 23, 1944 in Barnet ) is a British historian with a focus on the history of the Islamic world.

life and work

Francis Robinson is Professor of South Asian History at the University of London's Royal Holloway College . He was Head of History from 1990 to 1996 and Vice President of Royal Holloway from 1997 to 2004. Robinson is also Professorial Research Associate at the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Brasenose College , Oxford.

Robinson was President of the Royal Asiatic Society from 1997 to 2000 and from 2003 to 2006 .

Robinson's research interests center on the Muslim world, with a particular focus on religious and political change, Muslim responses to modern questions, scholars and holy families, and the Muslims of South Asia. He has several books on the Islamic world, including the Atlas of the Islamic World Since 1500 (1982), The Cambridge Illustrated History of the Islamic World (1997), Islam and Muslim History in South Asia (2000), The Ulama of Farangi Mahall and Islamic Culture in South Asia (2001), The Mughal Emperors (2007) and Islam, South Asia, and the West (2007).
