Francis Walder

Francis Walder (* as Francis Waldburger August 5, 1906 in Brussels , † April 16, 1997 in Paris ) was a Belgian writer. In 1958 he received the Prix ​​Goncourt for his novel Saint Germain ou la négociation .

Walder attended the Royal Military Academy in Brussels and was a Belgian artillery officer during World War II and a German prisoner of war for five years. After the end of the war he was involved in related diplomatic negotiations on the Belgian side. As a writer, he did not work until after his military career.

His novel Saint Germain ou la négociation is about the negotiations between the French king and the Huguenots that led to the Peace of Saint-Germain (1570) . Two more historical novels followed (one about Vincent Voiture , the other (Chaillot ou la coexistence) about Cardinal Richelieu and his relationship with the King and Duke of Orleans). He also published philosophical essays.
