Francisco José Fernández Ordóñez (* 1930 in Madrid ; † August 7, 1992 ibid) was a Spanish socialist politician and long-time foreign minister.

Studies and professional career

After studying law at the Complutense University in Madrid and at Harvard University , he became an employee of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 1959. Still under Franco , he became Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 1973 and President of the National Industrial Institute (INI) in 1974 . For political reasons, however, he resigned in the same year.

Political career

In 1974 he founded the small Social Democratic Party , which in 1977 joined the Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD) of then Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez . In 1977 he was appointed Minister of Finance and then Minister of Justice on September 8, 1980. On August 31, 1981, he resigned as Minister of Justice and left the UCD in protest against police attacks. He then founded the small Democratic Action Party. A short time later, however, he joined the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) .

In the elections to parliament ( Cortes Generales ) in 1982 he was elected to the House of Representatives (Congreso de los Diputados). There he represented the interests of the PSOE until his death.

After the election, he was appointed President of the Foreign Trade Bank by Prime Minister Felipe González on October 28, 1982. On July 5, 1985, he was appointed Foreign Minister in the González cabinet. During his tenure, Spain joined the European Community in 1986 . He was also the first Spanish President of the Council of the European Community in the first half of 1989 . He held the post of Foreign Minister until shortly before his death and was replaced by Javier Solana on June 22, 1992 due to his health .

In November 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Doctor honoris causa of the Polytechnic University of Valencia .
