Francisco Manuel Barroso (born September 29, 1804 in Lisbon , † August 8, 1882 in Montevideo ) was a Brazilian naval officer who fought in the Triple Alliance War and the Brazilian War . He was the commanding admiral of the Brazilian fleet in the battle of the Riachuelo .

He was born on September 29, 1804 in Lisbon to Real da Marinha Teodósio Manuel Barroso and Antônia Joaquim Barroso da Silva. In 1808 Barroso traveled to Brazil with his family to accompany the Portuguese royal family.

He entered the Naval Academy at the age of 17 and became an ensign at 21. He gained his first experience in sea battles in 1827 in the war between Argentina and Brazil .

He took part in the suppression of the Cabanagem uprising in 1836 and in the fight against the Farrapen Revolution in the Rio Grande do Sul region . In 1840 he was appointed commander of the Santa Catalina Navy. In 1854 he received the title of Commander of the Order of St. Benedict of Avis. With the rank of captain he was in command of the naval department at the Río de la Plata .

When the Triple Alliance War broke out in 1865 , the commander of the Brazilian fleet, Joaquim Marques Lisboa Barroso , handed over command of the troops of the 2nd Marine Division. Barroso commanded the Brazilian troops a. a. at the Battle of the Riachuelo on June 11, 1865.

Barroso was awarded the Imperial Order of the Cross in the Dignitar class in 1865 and was given the title of Barão do Amazonas (Baron of the Amazon) in 1866 .

After the war he retired from active service with the rank of admiral and lived in Montevideo , where he died on August 8, 1882.

He was inducted into the pantheon of heroes of the country of Brazil on May 25, 2005 on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the sea battle of Riachuelo.
