Francisco Romero Robledo (born March 8, 1838 in Antequera , † March 3, 1906 in Madrid ) was a Spanish lawyer and politician .

Life

Francisco Romero Robledo, who owned large estates in Andalusia , was drawn into the great political movements of the 1850s very early on. Before he had reached the legal age of 25, he was elected to the Cortes by his supporters in his hometown in 1856 and, as a result of his brilliant eloquence, immediately came to the fore in political life. He took an active part in the September Revolution of 1868 , was a member of the Revolutionary Junta of Madrid and became Minister of Public Works. Opponent of Amadeo , but a strict monarchist, he then worked alongside Antonio Cánovas del Castillo and other Alfonsinos for the restoration of the Bourbons . From December 31, 1874 to March 7, 1879 he was Minister of the Interior. He also held influential offices in the later cabinet of Cánovas del Castillo - he was Minister of the Interior from December 1879 to February 1881 and again from January 1884 to July 1885 - but at the end of 1895 he fell out with Cánovas over the policy on Cuba . He later formed a special group within the Conservative Party and was President of the Chamber of Deputies from 1904–05 .
