Francisco Simó Damirón

Francisco Alberto Simó Damirón (born November 21, 1908 in San Francisco de Macorís , † April 3, 1992 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican pianist and composer.

Simó studied music theory and solfège with Sixto Brea as well as harmony and composition with Rafael Pimentel and then became a member of Avelino Muñoz's orchestra . In the mid-1930s he formed a duo with Negrito Chapuseaux , and in December 1937 he was one of the founding members of Billo Frómetas Billo’s Happy Boys in Venezuela. He separated from them after seven months and went to Panama.

In 1945 he founded the Trio Los Alegres Tres with the singer Sylvia de Grasse and her husband Negrito Chapuseaux . In the 1950s and 1960s he performed in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico and Panama, among others. He lived in Puerto Rico and New York. There he was friends with Nat King Cole and performed with musicians such as Frank Sinatra , Harry Belafonte , Agustín Lara and Libertad Lamarque .

Simó composed more than 300 works and recorded 65 LPs. He, Sylvia de Grasse and Negrito Chapuseaux were called Los Reyes del Merengue . 1973 was awarded the Orden de Duarte, Sánchez y Mella , 1978 con la with the Orden de Francisco Miranda .
