Leopoldo de Alpandeire OFMCap (born June 24, 1864 in Alpandeire in the province of Málaga ; † February 9, 1956 in Granada ), often just called Fray Leopoldo in Spain , was a Spanish Capuchin who mainly worked in Granada and continues to be one there revered figure is. Brother Leopoldo was born on June 24, 1864 under the name Francisco Tomás de San Juan Bautista Márquez y Sánchez in Alpandeire, a small village in the province of Málaga , as the eldest of four children of a farming family and was baptized on June 29, 1864. In 1894, at the age of 35, after the sermon of two Capuchins in the city of Ronda on the occasion of the beatification of Diego Josés de Cádiz, he decided to devote his life to religion. He turned to the Capuchins of Ronda and was accepted as a postulant in the Capuchin Convent of Seville in 1899 . In 1900 he became a novice and took the religious name Leopold . In the following years he worked in Antequera , Granada and Seville and was permanently assigned to the monastery in Granada on February 21, 1914, where he spent the next 42 years.

Leopold mostly worked as quaestor of his convent ; so he went through the city and asked the believers for donations. He became a well-known figure in the city, called "the beggar of the three Ave Marias," as he said this prayer for those who asked for his blessing.

Adoration

Br. Leopold died in Granada on February 9, 1956; his relics rest in a crypt consecrated to him in the Capuchin Church of Granada on the Jardines del Triunfo. In March 2008, Br. Leopoldo was made Venerable Servant of God . On September 12, 2010 Angelo Cardinal Armato spoke to him on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI. Blessed in Armilla ; the celebration was attended by more than 60,000 believers.

The crypt of Fray Leopoldo is the most visited monument in the city of Granada after the Alhambra complex, with around 60,000 visitors per month ; however, in this case the greater part of the visitors are residents of the region. In addition to the relics, there has been a cycle of pictures by Hugolino de Belluno on the life of Leopoldo's brother since 1998. In addition to the crypt, there is also a small museum dedicated to Brother Leopoldo's life and a replica of his cell in Granada that contains other relics of touch.
