Franco Fortini

Franco Fortini , actually Franco Lattes , (born September 10, 1917 in Florence , Kingdom of Italy , † November 28, 1994 in Milan ) was an Italian poet , author , translator and Marxist intellectual.

Life

Fortini was born Franco Lattes to a Jewish lawyer and a Catholic mother. He studied law and philosophy and in 1939 became a member of the Waldensian Protestant Church . In 1940 he took his mother's name to avoid hostility because of his Jewish descent. In 1941 he became an officer in the Italian army and fled to Switzerland in 1943 . In 1944 he joined the partisans in the northern Italian alpine valley of Val d'Ossola . In the same year he became a member of the Italian Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI).

After the end of the war, Fortini settled in Milan and worked there as a journalist and translator. He broke ties with the Socialist Party after the Soviet troops marched into Hungary during the Hungarian uprising in 1956. From 1964 to 1972, alongside his work as a poet and author, he worked at various high schools. Since 1976 he has been professor of literary criticism at the University of Siena . During these years he was one of the most important and influential representatives of the Italian New Left .
