Frank Byron Rowlett (born May 2, 1908 in Rose Hill , Lee County , Virginia , † June 29, 1998 Gaithersburg , Maryland ) was an American mathematician and cryptologist .

In 1930, the mathematics teacher Frank B. Rowlett became one of the first employees of the Signals Intelligence Service (SIS) under William Friedman , a military department which at that time was primarily concerned with the development of encryption techniques for the US Army. In 1936 he was involved with Solomon Kullback in the deciphering of the diplomatic communications of the Japanese encrypted with machines (code name Red).

During the Second World War , Rowlett and William Friedman played a key role in the development of a machine for the encryption of military messages of the US Navy , which was known as SIGABA .

After the war he was head of cryptanalysis at the NSA, which was founded in 1952 .
