Frank Cho (* 2. December 1971 in Seoul , South Korea as Cho Duk-hyun ) is a writer and artist of comics.

Life

In 1977 his parents emigrated to the USA with him. During his training at Prince George's Community College , he published his first comic strips with the title Everything but the Kitchen Sink in the student newspaper there in the early 1990s . Cho's drawing art quickly became popular. When he moved to the University of Maryland in 1994 , where he trained as a nurse, he drew the series University Square (later renamed University Freaks ) for the student paper "Diamondback" . This was the forerunner of the Liberty Meadows series with the pretty psychologist Brandy, the shy veterinarian Frank and all kinds of crazy animals. A short strip by the draftsman appeared daily for three semesters. Cho likes to orient his work on the comic series of the 50s.

In 1994, Cho won the United Media Syndicate's “Best College Cartoonist Award” from 157 competitors . Now it was clear to Cho that in the future he wanted to earn his living as a cartoonist and not as a nurse. Nevertheless, he successfully completed his training. He sent samples of his drawing skills to all the major newspapers. He received rejections from most of the papers that his stories were too aggressive and not suitable for families. The Creators Syndicate offered him a 15-year contract in 1996, which Cho accepted. From 1997 on he delivered a daily strip of the new series Liberty Meadows . His comics soon appeared in many of the major US newspapers and Cho quickly gained international fame. In 1999 he received the Ignatz Award for his work .

Cho's endeavor was that his works were not just published as short strips in newspapers. The publisher Insight Studios Group , he published in 1999 the first issue of Liberty Meadows with reprints and new stories. In 2002, Cho terminated his contract with the Creators Syndicate. He switched to major label Image , where a paperback collection of Liberty Meadows appeared every two months . He also published several books of illustrations and oil paintings. With Mark Wheatley, Cho illustrated the novel Jimgrim and the Devil at Ludd by Talbot Mundy .

Since 2002 the comic strips have also been published in German translation. Salleck Publications reprinted the American magazine series. Since 2003, Cho has also devoted himself to other magazine series such as Shanna, the She-Devil , Marvel Knights: Spider-Man and Zombieking . Cho produced numerous magazine covers for Marvel .
