Frank Furedi

Frank Furedi (* 1947 in Budapest ) is a professor of sociology at the University of Kent in Great Britain.

biography

After 1956, Furedi's family emigrated from Hungary to Canada. Furedi studied at McGill University in Montreal and has lived in Great Britain since 1969. He received his PhD at the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London with a thesis on the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya. As a former student radical, he co-founded the Trotskyist Revolutionary Communist Party in the 1970s . He is now one of the leading sociologists and is often quoted in the British press.

Furedi works with the online magazine Spiked . He is a guest author for the Axis of the Good and the debate magazine Novo .

His wife, Ann Furedi, runs the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, the UK's largest private abortion consultancy.

Furedi is known for his work on the sociology of fear, therapy culture, fearful upbringing, and dealing with risk and knowledge. He takes critical positions on Anthony Giddens and Ulrich Beck . He sees global warming as a much smaller danger than an inability of politics to lead seriously.

2001 coined the term Furedi parent-determinism (Engl. Parental determinism returns), an ideology that social problems en masse educational failure of parents. The concept had a major impact on the young research field of parenting culture in the UK .
