Frank Helmenstein (born April 13, 1965 in Ründeroth ) is a German local politician ( CDU ) and has been the full-time mayor of the city of Gummersbach in the Oberbergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia since October 18, 2004 .

Life

Helmenstein studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and completed his studies in 1992 with the first state examination in law. He completed his legal traineeship in the legal preparatory service of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and passed the second state examination in 1994. After that, Helmenstein first worked in a law firm. From April 1, 1996 to October 17, 2004 he worked for the city of Halle (Saale) , most recently as city administration director.

In 1980, Helmenstein first joined the Young Union of Germany (JU), then in 1983 also joined the CDU.

He stood as a candidate for the CDU for the mayoral election in 2004 in Gummersbach and won the runoff election with 57.37% of the votes cast. In 2009 he achieved 69.04% of the votes cast, and in the early mayoral election in 2014, Helmenstein prevailed against two competitors in the first ballot with 58.21% of the votes cast.

As a full-time mayor, Helmenstein is a member of the supervisory board or shareholder of 28 public and non-profit institutions and companies.

On February 23, 2019, he celebrated his 25th anniversary in public service.

Helmenstein is married and has two children.
