Frank Soltis
Frank Gerald Soltis (born August 29, 1940 ) is an American computer scientist . He is an IBM freelancer and Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota , USA.
In 1968 Soltis received his doctorate in electrical engineering from Iowa State University . His dissertation was entitled "Automatic Allocation of Digital Computer Storage Resources for Time-sharing".
Frank Soltis, sometimes referred to as the "father of the AS / 400", had defined the basic concept of a new computer technology with single-level linear memory ("single-level addressability") and vertical machine code ("high-level machine interface"). In Rochester this concept was implemented as the IBM System / 38 and later refined in the IBM AS / 400 .
He also led the development of various processors - from the 64-bit PowerPC / AS processor to today's POWER7 .
On December 31, 2008, Dr. Frank Soltis is back from active service at IBM and dedicates himself more to his professorship and the AS / 400 user association COMMON.
